Charlotte Invokana Lawyer

The Nye Law Group is investigating claims alleging that Invokana and other similar diabetes medications cause potentially life-threatening side effects like ketoacidosis and kidney failure.

The manufacturers of Invokana and other sodium-glucose cotransport-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are accused of failing to warn patients about the dangerous side effects of these drugs.

SGLT2 drugs are currently under recall and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued two warnings about them.

If you or a loved one has been hospitalized for ketoacidosis or kidney problems after taking any of these diabetes drugs, you may be able to join an Invokana lawsuit to recover compensation for the physical, emotional and financial side effects that you have experienced.

The Nye Law Group offers a free, initial consultation so victims can discuss their particular situation and learn all of the legal options available to them. Our experienced dangerous drug attorneys have helped many victims of dangerous drugs recover compensation for damages.

Dangers of Invokana and SGLT2 Medications

Invokana is one of many potentially dangerous drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes, others include:

  • Xigduo XR (dapagliflozin/metformin)
  • Invokamet (canagliflozin/metformin)
  • Glyxambi (empagliflozin/linagliptin)
  • Farxiga (dapagliflozen)
  • Jardiance (empagliflozen)

These drugs work by increasing sugar removal in the kidneys, limiting the amount of sugar that is absorbed in the stomach and intestines, and decreasing the amount of sugar produced in the liver.

However, SGLT2 inhibitors carry a much higher risk of ketoacidosis than other diabetes medications. This condition can be life-threatening as it causes acid levels in the blood to become dangerously high. Symptoms of ketoacidosis include:

  • Confusion
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Extreme thirst
  • Fruity-smelling breath

If you have experienced any of these ketoacidosis symptoms, contact our skilled defective drug lawyers to find out if you could join an Invokana lawsuit for the damages you have suffered.

Warnings About Invokana

The FDA received about 20 reports linking Invokana to ketoacidosis shortly after the drug was approved in Aug. 2014, but pharmaceutical companies continued to produce and sell Invokana and other dangerous SGLT2 drugs.

The reports of ketoacidosis prompted the FDA to issue a drug safety alert in May 2015 telling consumers that Invokana may lead to ketoacidosis and that it was going to investigate reports of these side effects.

Researchers at the University of San Diego studied the effects of the drug and found a well-documented link between taking the drug and developing ketoacidosis.

Researchers studied 351 diabetic patients over an 18-week period, with half of the patients taking Invokana and the other half taking a placebo. Seven patients who took 300 mg doses and five who took 100 mg doses suffered ketoacidosis during the study. However, no patients taking the placebo developed ketoacidosis.

The alarming results of the study caused the FDA to issue its second warning in Dec. 2015. The FDA said that Inovkana and similar SGLT2 drugs may lead to an increased risk of ketoacidosis.

If you are or have taken Invokana or other dangerous SGLT2 drugs, contact our defective drug lawyers to find out if you are entitled to join an Invokana lawsuit to recover compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages.
