On Sunday, football fans throughout Georgia will be tuning in to cheer on the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI. For many people, cheering on their team will go hand in hand with drinking alcohol.
Unfortunately, all of the drinking that will go on during the Super Bowl will increase the risk of drunk driving accidents after the game.
These accidents are often deadly, as almost 30 percent of fatal accidents in 2015 involved a drunk driver. These crashes claimed the lives of 10,265 people.
The risk of these accidents on Super Bowl Sunday motivated the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to partner with local law enforcement in Georgia and throughout the country to prevent these dangerous crashes.
They created the Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk marketing campaign to encourage partygoers to plan ahead to help ensure they make it home safely.
If you plan on drinking at the party, arrange a ride home from someone who will not drink at all. Drinking even small amounts of alcohol can impair a person's judgment behind the wheel, possibly causing an accident.
Partygoers could also plan on using the NHTSA’s SaferRide app to arrange for a taxi or a friend to come pick them up when the game is over. The app can be used on Android or Apple mobile devices.
If your designated driver drinks, both of you need to find another ride home. There is no sense in either one of you risking your safety.
Make sure you and your driver wear your seat belts on the way home, as it could save your lives or prevent severe injury if you are involved in an accident.
The NHTSA is recognizing sober drivers this Super Bowl weekend on its Twitter Wall of Fame. Tweet the name of your designated driver to @NHTSAgov so he or she can receive the recognition they deserve.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a drunk driving accident, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
