ambulance leaving accidentA Savannah morning news anchor was killed in a head-on collision early Sunday morning near the Talmadge Bridge on Highway 17.

The news anchor was in the back seat of a red 2009 Mitsubishi Galant heading north on Highway 17, also called Speedway Boulevard.

At about 4 a.m., the Mitsubishi crashed into a 2000 Dodge pickup truck traveling southbound, according to authorities who responded to the crash.

The news anchor was not wearing his seatbelt and died at the scene of the accident, according to authorities.

Both drivers and the two passengers in the Mitsubishi suffered injuries and were transported to Memorial University Medical Center for treatment.

The stretch of road where the crash occurred is terrible and accidents like the one on Sunday morning happen often, according to Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls.

Authorities shut down the Back River Bridge for several hours while investigating the crash.

The accident is being investigated by the South Carolina Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
