Roundabouts are supposed to help decrease car accidents. Unfortunately, the opposite has happened at the roundabout at Bluffton Parkway and Bluffton Road.
Since being installed about seven years ago, the number of crashes has steadily increased each year, from just six in 2011 to more than 30 in 2016, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Fortunately, none of these collisions have resulted in deaths, but several have caused injuries.
Injury crashes were more likely to occur on Saturdays, according to South Carolina Department of Public Safety data. Wednesdays and Thursdays were the days when the highest numbers of collisions occurred.
September and December are the months when the most property-damage crashes happened at the Bluffton Road roundabout.
Crashes were most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and least likely to occur between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.
